A new personal distance record

You may remember that I ran my first full marathon this past November. That means that my personal distance record is 26.2 miles. The title of this post may lead you to believe that I covered a distance further than that, but that’s not the case. My overall personal distance record remains 26.2 miles. But I do have a new personal distance record on the treadmill!

That’s right, this afternoon I ran 13.1 miles with Sven. You know that saying “I’m only half crazy” that goes with the half marathon? Well, I think when you take a half marathon and put it on a treadmill it becomes full crazy. I used movie entertainment to keep me going. Before my run, I narrowed it down to four movies.

I ended up going with Remember the Titans. You can’t beat a great football movie with an awesome soundtrack. I especially love this movie because it centers around the high schools in the area that I grew up in and it’s focused on the era my dad grew up in, which is pretty cool. Once I finished that movie, I still had roughly 30 minutes to go, so I put in Jurassic Park. I skipped right to where the action starts. Barry says I am not allowed to watch Jurassic Park while running anymore because the T-Rex is too loud.

I guess that roaring (is that the sound T-Rex’s make??) can be heard throughout the entire house when you have the TV turned up loud enough to hear it over the treadmill. In addition to the movies, I kept myself going by keeping a towel over the treadmill display and playing with the incline. I fueled with two Vanilla Honey Stinger gels, one Salted Caramel Gu, and water. And the whole reason I did my long run on the treadmill in the first place? It’s snowing again outside, adding to the 18 inches we already have, and we are having 16-20 mph winds which is causing snow drifts on the road. No thank you.

Speaking of movies, I have been watching more than I usually do lately. On Thursday night I watched Easy A, which still makes me laugh out loud. On Friday afternoon I started Crazy, Stupid, Love, and I finished it this morning. Friday night Barry and I watched The Great Gatsby (I think they used the cliff notes version of the book to make the movie…). Then there was Remember the Titans and most of Jurassic Park while I ran. And lastly, I am currently watching Sixteen Candles as I type this. That’s a lot of movies.

What’s the longest distance you’ve ever covered on a treadmill?

Which is your favorite movie from the ones I’ve watched over the past few days?

Does anyone else have Monday off of work?
I do!

  1. I’m cracking up that Barry doesn’t want you watching Jurassic Park on the treadmill!! I want headphones that wirelessly hook to my t.v. Does such a thing exist? Great job on the treadmill distance PR. I think mine is something like 8 miles and that was torture.

    1. Hi! There are wireless headphones that do that! We have them and they help tremendously!

    2. I remember seeing an infomercial that sold wireless headphones for a TV. I think it involved an old guy who wanted to watch TV in bed while his wife slept, but he had to have it up so loud that it kept her up. Cue wireless headphones! I could definitely use something like that, because I do have to have the TV turned up pretty loud to hear it over the treadmill.

  2. I’m a bit of a treadmill freak – love running on my treadmill – best way to stay up on DVRed shows and movies. My longest distance at one time is 44 miles (I do my age on my birthday) – that was a rough one and I walked a lot!!
Great job on the treadmill half marathon – and you went with one of my favorite movies (Remember the Titans!).

    1. You are HARD CORE! 44 miles on the Treadmill?!?!?!?! Holy WAH (that’s the time I spent in the U.P. coming out!!)!!

    2. 44 miles on the treadmill is insane! That’s awesome that you do your age in miles on your birthday each year. You’ll have to put in a lot of training for the day you turn 100 🙂

  3. Congrats on getting a TM PR! Watching movies is what I used to do when I spent a lot of time on the TM, too.

    1. Thanks! Movies are my Godsend when it comes to long runs on the treadmill.

  4. It would have been hard for me not to watch the Twilight movies (esp. since you have 1 and 2 of the last book). I haven’t seen the one you watched! :-/
I do NOT have Monday off of work (but the boys do!). FUSD and NAU need to collaborate!!

    1. …oh~ I forgot~ YOU ARE CRAZY INSANE to run 13.1 on the treadmill! Way to go! That’s awesome! Did you get off now and then?

    2. You haven’t seen Remember the Titans!? You NEED to see that movie! If you have Netflix, you should totally check it out.

Thanks! Yes- I got off 3 different times. Two times were for bathroom breaks, and one of those times was a combo bathroom break/refill water bottle break. Keep in mind I was running on the basement next to the woodstove where it was nearly 80 degrees. The third time was when I finished Remember the Titans and had to hop off to put in Jurassic Park.

  5. 13.1 on the treadmill? You are a rock star! I can’t stand it past 10. I have tomorrow off, and I’m so excited! I’m hoping to get in for a last minute massage!

    1. Hah, thanks! I wouldn’t make it past 2 miles if it weren’t for music and TV/movies. Hope you enjoy your day off and are able to get your massage! I’m jealous 🙂

  6. Good job on running a treadmill half! Because of snow, I had to run a couple of 20-milers and 16-milers in 2010, and that was no fun!

Remember the Titans is my favorite movie out of the ones you mention. Bill was playing basketball against those high schools during the time that the movie focuses on, so he really enjoyed watching it.

    1. Yeesh running those 20- and 16-milers on the treadmill will definitely make you mentally tough!! I’ll have to remember to ask you what high school Bill went to the next time we see each other 🙂 My dad’s high school was the last one to integrate in the area, so he saw a lot of what is portrayed in the movie first hand. The movie is great on its own, but I think it’s even more enjoyable when you have a connection like that.
