TNF ECS 50K Training – Week 6

I’m almost halfway though my training for my first ultramarathon – The North Face Endurance Challenge 50K! I don’t think I’ve had a week, yet, where I followed my training plan as written. This week was no different. But I still got all of my workouts in. I’ve done a lot of traveling so far this year, but hopefully I’ll have a normal week where I just do my training as planned. Maybe that will be this coming week? 🙂

Here is a recap of last week’s workouts, as part of the Weekly Wrap link up hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin’.

Monday – Rest.

Tuesday – Cross training: 30 Day Shred level 2 workout. With this DVD there are three levels, which go from ‘easy’ to ‘hard’. However, I think each one is a good workout and they all work slightly different muscle groups. That’s why I like to rotate through the levels each week.

Wednesday – 5 mile hill workout after work with Sven (the treadmill). I was feeling a bit sluggish during this run, so it was a tough one. I got in seven quarter mile hill repeats for 533 feet in elevation gain.

Thursday – 4 mile easy run with Sven in the evening, then 10 minutes of abs/core work.

Friday – 6 mile easy run. This run started out at a nearby park, and it was my intention to run the entire run at the park. Despite the wind, it was a pretty day to be outside.

However, there were too many loose dogs at the park. So I ended up heading home after just three miles and finished the final three on the treadmill.

Saturday – 13 mile long run while at my dad’s for the weekend (I was in town for my cousin’s baby shower). My friend Jackie – remember her? The one who ran 16 miles last weekend with her longest run before that being 6 miles – joined me again. She also lives in the area. I had 12 miles planned, but she texted me the day before and asked if I wanted to do 13 instead. Direct quote from her: “I mean what’s one more mile lol.” I think I have created a monster 🙂

So we met up just before sunrise at a nearby park for our run. Watching the sun come up over the lake was gorgeous and the time flew by during our run. There were lots of other people out, too!

The trail was icy in several spots. There were a few times where we would be tip toeing across the ice and the ice would break, causing my foot to plunge ankle-deep in ice cold muddy water. That will wake you up!

We did two full laps around the lake and a few extra out and backs to round out the distance. After our run, Jackie snapped a quick post-run selfie. I take lots of pictures when I run, but I seldom think to take one of myself. Plus I always manage to look super awkward in post-run photos 🙂

Sunday – 4 miles easy in the neighborhood before I hit the road to head home. My lower back felt a bit sore from Saturday’s long run, but other than that and some general fatigue I felt fine. It continues to surprise me how good I feel the day after my long run.

Total Miles: 32 miles

By the time Sunday night rolled around, I was definitely feeling tired, a little sore, and ready for a rest day. Good thing that’s exactly what’s on tap for today! I’ll be ready to get back at it tomorrow.

Did you watch the Super Bowl? What did you think of the game and the halftime show?
How was your week last week? Are you looking forward to anything this week?
I’m running a 10 mile race on Saturday and it’s going to be fun!

  1. Good superbowl. The halftime show was a B-minus. Cold Play got schooled by Bruno Mars and Beyonce.

    1. I do think the show could have just been Bruno Mars and Beyonce and that would have been fine. 😉

  2. At least you’re getting your training in. I only follow a training plan for long runs, then do everything else on my schedule. I’m hoping I can stick to my plan, but I know things always come up.

    1. Life is inevitable, but boy wouldn’t it be nice to just stick to a training plan to a T?

  3. Great week! The weather has plunged again here, so I think I’ll be spending a lot of quality time with my treadmill. This morning was an interval workout on the ‘mill. Ick.

I was happy that the Broncos won – and more importantly Peyton Manning! I think it’s a great way to go out. Cam Newton has plenty more Super Bowl games in his future. Also, I think Carolina played pretty poorly after such a great season.

    1. One good thing I will say about interval work on the treadmill – to me an interval run goes by faster on the ‘mill than an easy run where you’re not messing with pace or incline. Not sure if that’s the same for you, though.

  4. That’s great that you had someone to run your long run with you! Kind of makes up for the day before with all of the loose dogs at the park!

    1. I’ve been getting spoiled with long run buddies recently!

  5. Good job getting in lots of mileage. I watched the SB, but my team was not playing so I really did not care who won. However, I did love the Doritos commercial and the half time show! My excitement this week is that I am leaving for Florida and then a cruise Friday.

    1. I liked the Doritos commercial, too! Wow, have a great time on your cruise!!

  6. Where was all the snow in that picture? Had it all melted before you started getting more today! Sounds like you’ve definitely created a monster in Jackie!

    1. That last picture was in my dad’s neck of the woods. Just the last vestiges of those mega piles from plowing 30″ of snow a couple of weeks ago 🙂

  7. What have you done to Jackie? Ha. It’s great to have someone do those long runs with. What a pretty sunrise you captured. Are those ducks in the water? I missed the Super Bowl halftime show! My favorite ad was Snickers with Willem Dafoe as Marilyn Monroe. Thanks for linking with us Meagan.

    1. Unfortunately, I think it will be awhile until Jackie and I get to run together again. But it was fun that it worked out for us to run two weekends in a row together! Yes those are ducks in the water – they must be hearty ducks because it was in the teens outside!

  8. Ha that is so funny about Jackie, she has been bitten for sure! Great for the both of you! The views I get from running at the campground with the sun coming up over the lake is one reason I continue to go back there time and time again! I’m sort of like Jackie, can’t get enough of it! Great job on your training Meagan, what fun race do you have coming up?

    1. Running at that campground at sunrise sounds gorgeous! I was supposed to run the Blacksburg Classic 10 Miler (a race both my husband and I have run several years now) this past weekend. However, it got postponed because of the extreme cold temperatures we had this weekend. Instead, I will be running it this coming Saturday, as part of my 20 mile long run. Yikes!
